Big Rock

Della Higley, one of Carnelia Gifford Crawford’s 86 grandchildren, was born in 1914.  As a young girl, on hot afternoons in the summertime, she’d take a book to read in the shade of a big rock across the road from her family farm. Meanwhile, her cousin J.L. Crawford, if he could get out of some of the farm work, would go skinny-dipping in the old ice pond.

My work is through
My day is done
I’m gonna lay my body down
June afternoon
The sun’s still high
I know a shady place to lie
Big rock, shield me from the sun (x2)

I’ll take you 'round
Raspberry Bend
We’ll listen to the song of the canyon wren
We’ll skinny dip
In the old ice pond
And wave away the heat with a magic wand
Big rock, shield me from the sun (x2)

I’ve got a hat full of buzzing bees
I’ve got a bag full of mysteries
Let’s hitch a ride on the western breeze
And ride it like a raven through the                      mulberry trees

One winter day
I’ll climb on top
And sit in the sun on that big old rock
When April comes
To melt the snow
I’ll jump back down to the shade below
Big rock, shield me from the sun (x4)
